Imagine, if you will…..

Eight years, over half of your life, spent in a cage. Think of it as in you bedroom with no bathroom other than the floor you must sleep on. Never being able to run and play. Never knowing for sure when or even if someone would bring you food again. Never being loved and never being touched. Imagine the pain of sores from the acidic urine sitting on your skin for days, weeks and months. Praying for rain to wash away some of the waste. Imagine losing your eyesight and not even being able to watch the world around you, because no one cared to help.

Imagine, if you will…..

Being a loyal friend and wondering… why are you burning the flesh away from my head. Think of it as someone burning off most of the skin on your forehead. What did I do? How have I let you down? I am sorry, please stop…it hurts!

Imagine, if you will….

Being allowed to play with your friends, the families precious children, but knowing that this is not because you are loved as well, but because you do not matter. Imagine not being loved enough to be fed regularly. Imagine being willing to lay down your life for those children, and only asking to be fed and protected from disease and the betrayal of not being valued enough for that simple consideration.

Imagine, if you will all of the other stories and betrayals…..

Now Imagine, if you will what was going through their minds as a score of people came out on the hottest day of the year, a holiday nonetheless, and sacrificed time and sweat to make our temporary homes more comfortable. Imagine the joy at seeing someone care and having someone pass us treats and speak kindly to us and what the heck is that big cage outside for anyway? Could it be for us to run and play in when we meet new families?!

Imagine the joy when someone takes the blind dog out for a walk, and then stops and says it is ok for me to wander around…to sniff the world and listen to the birds…and what is in that special bag—boy it smells really good. Could that be for me?

Imagine what was going through his mind. What are these balloons all about and where are you taking me? “I have never even been in a house before, are you sure it is ok?” As they hours went on he couldn’t help but think, “when is this going to end—it must be a dream?” And as night time fell and his new friend went to bed he called for me—it must be to put me outside. But no, he is wanting me to follow him. What is going on? And as I cautiously climb into bed and curl up with my new friend I put a smile on my face and pray that I am forever home.

Imagine what goes through each of their minds as they realize they are loved and someday they really can go home……forever.
